In its initiative to save the environment from the harmful effects of the plastic, Municipal Corporation Jalandhar (MCJ) has decided to make Burlton Park a plastic free zone.
On Saturday morning, Leading from front Municipal Commissioner Mr Diperva Lakra along with joint commissioner Ms Aashika Jain, other officials and more than 350 students of various colleges carried out a cleanliness drive and collectively removed the plastic bags, disposable or other material from the park.
Divulging more details, MC Commissioner Mr Diperva Lakra said that plastic play major havoc with the health of the residents and the decision to make Burlton Park a plastic-free zone has been taken as a first step to making the city free from the plastic.  Mr Lakra said that the main aim of the campaign is to make people aware of the bad effects of plastic. He added that this campaign would be transformed into a movement and the civic body will use the services of NSS volunteers, NCC cadets and NGOs in creating awareness among the public so that the menace can be eradicated from the city.
MC Commissioner also told that the officers in the civic body have been urged to keep the endeavor alive by carrying it home and making our children also a part of the campaign against the menace. He said that the civic will also rope in the people from all walks of life to change the look of this prestigious park and will also keep a vigil on the burning of garbage here as it creates a lot of pollution, which is too hazardous for human health.  He appreciated the participation of 350 students and volunteers of National Service Scheme (NSS) and cadets of National Cadet Corps (NCC) from DAV Institute of Engineering & Technology (DAVIET), Mehr Chand Polytechnic College, DAV College and others were present.
